About EMDR Therapy
EMDR (eye movement desensitisation & reprocessing) aims to reduce distress in the shortest possible time. It was first developed during the 1980’s by American Psychologist Dr Francine Shapiro, who noticed that certain eye movements reduced the intensity of disturbing thought. She then conducted a scientific study with trauma victims in 1988 and the research was published in The Journal of Traumatic Stress (1989).
EMDR Therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma just as it can from physical trauma. If a traumatic or negative event is experienced, the body’s own natural cognitive and neurological coping mechanisms can become so overwhelmed, that sometimes that “memory” is inadequately processed and becomes “trapped” within the mind.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation right/left eye movements, which repeatedly activate the opposite sides of the brain, thus releasing those emotional experiences. The troubling thoughts and images are processed correctly and a more peaceful state is achieved. It is similar to REM (rapid eye movement) which is the natural form of reprocessing events which occurs when we are in deep sleep.
