Studies have shown that giving is also good for the giver by boosting our physical and mental wellbeing. There is evidence that, during gift-giving behaviours, we secrete “feel good” chemicals in our brains, eg serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin. These health benefits associated with giving include:
- Lower blood pressure
- Increased self-esteem
- Lower stress levels
- Longer life
- Greater happiness
Finally, kindness is contagious. Helping others will spur others to do the same too!
